17 Inch Tire Size Chart 2026: Complete Height & Width Guide
Height, width and sidewall for all 45 sizes that fit a 17-inch wheel, checked against published Continental and Maxxis specs.
Short answer: a 17 inch tire size chart shows how tall and wide each tire that mounts on a 17-inch wheel is. On Firestone's list of 17" sizes, overall height runs from about 23.5 inches (205/40R17) to 34.4 inches (315/70R17) for metric sizes, and up to 37 inches nominal for flotation sizes like 37x12.50R17. Firestone names four sizes as its most popular 17" tires: 225/45R17 (25.0 in tall, 8.9 in wide), 215/55R17 (26.3 in), 225/65R17 (28.5 in) and 265/70R17 (31.6 in). Stick with the size on your vehicle's tire placard unless you have checked a change carefully.
The list of 45 sizes comes from Firestone's 17-inch tires page, read on November 1, 2026. We calculated the diameters, widths, sidewall heights and revolutions per mile from the size codes ourselves, using the method set out below. To test that arithmetic against real tires, we compared it with the measured specifications Continental publishes for its ControlContact Tour M A/S, CrossContact LX25 and TerrainContact A/T, and with the spec tables Maxxis publishes for two off-road tires, all read the same day. Eighteen Continental sizes matched our figures to within 0.05 inch. The off-road tires did not match as closely, and the sections below explain why.
17 inch tire size chart
Below are all 45 sizes Firestone lists for 17-inch wheels, split into three groups by aspect ratio, because that is what separates a low sedan tire from a tall truck tire. "Diameter" is the nominal overall height, "width" the nominal section width, and "sidewall" the height from the wheel rim to the tread. Revolutions per mile are geometric figures from the unloaded diameter. Real tires turn about 3 percent more often, as the Continental comparison shows. Sizes Firestone calls its most popular 17" tires are marked.
Low-profile 17-inch sizes (40 to 55 series)
These have the shortest sidewalls on the list, between 3.2 and 5.1 inches. They range from 23.5 to 27.2 inches tall.

Crossover and SUV 17-inch sizes (60 and 65 series)
The middle group runs from 27.2 to 30.6 inches tall. Here the width drives the height: going from 215/65R17 to 265/65R17 adds 2.6 inches of diameter even though the aspect ratio does not change.

Truck and off-road 17-inch sizes (70 to 80 series and flotation)
The tall group starts at about 30 inches and reaches 34.4 inches for metric sizes. Flotation sizes add 33-, 35- and 37-inch nominal heights. Diameters for flotation sizes are the nominal figures in the size code. Measured tires can differ from them by a few tenths of an inch, as shown further down.

The chart makes the main point plain: "17 inch" describes the wheel, not the tire. Tires that mount on the same 17-inch wheel range from about 23.5 to 37 inches tall on Firestone's list, a spread of more than 13 inches. A 205/40R17 has a sidewall of 3.2 inches. A 37x12.50R17 has a sidewall of 10 inches. They have nothing in common but the bead diameter.
How the numbers are calculated
A metric size such as 225/65R17 contains three numbers. The first, 225, is the section width in millimeters. The second, 65, is the aspect ratio, meaning the sidewall height as a percentage of the width. R means radial construction, and 17 is the wheel diameter in inches. Our guide to reading a metric tire size goes through each part as it appears on the sidewall.
The arithmetic, worked for 225/65R17:
- Sidewall height = width x aspect ratio / 100 = 225 x 0.65 = 146.25 mm. Divided by 25.4, that is 5.76 inches.
- Overall diameter = wheel diameter + two sidewalls = 17 + 2 x 5.76 = 28.52 inches, rounded to 28.5.
- Width in inches = 225 / 25.4 = 8.86 inches.
- Circumference = diameter x pi = 89.6 inches.
- Revolutions per mile = 63,360 inches in a mile / circumference = about 707.
Flotation sizes, used on trucks and off-road vehicles, are written another way. In 35x12.50R17, 35 is the overall diameter in inches, 12.50 the section width in inches and 17 the wheel. The sidewall is (35 - 17) / 2 = 9.0 inches. Firestone writes these with a slash (35/12.50R17); on the sidewall and in most spec tables they use an x, and light-truck versions add LT at the end.
The same steps work for any 17-inch size that is not in the chart. If you have a 245/50R17, for example, the sidewall is 245 x 0.50 = 122.5 mm, or 4.82 inches, so the tire is about 26.65 inches tall.
Checking the math against real tires
Continental publishes a specification line for every size of each tire model, including a measured tire diameter and revolutions per mile. Across the ControlContact Tour M A/S, CrossContact LX25 and TerrainContact A/T, 18 different 17-inch sizes appear. Here they are next to our calculated figures:

Source: Continental Tire specification pages for each model, read November 1, 2026. Where a size appears in more than one model, the first listed model is shown. "Our" figures are calculated from the size code.
Every diameter agrees to within 0.05 inch. Continental lists 225/65R17 at 28.5 inches, which we calculate at 28.52, and LT315/70R17 at 34.4 inches, which we calculate at 34.36. That confirms the formula for both passenger and LT metric sizes, at least for this maker's road and all-terrain tires.
The revolutions per mile do not agree, and the gap is consistent: Continental's figures are 3.0 to 3.1 percent higher than ours for every size. For 225/65R17, Continental lists 729 against our 707. That is expected. Our figure assumes a perfect circle with the unloaded diameter. A tire carrying a vehicle flattens where it meets the road, so it rolls on a slightly shorter effective radius and turns more times per mile. If you need revolutions per mile for gearing or speedometer work, use the tire maker's published figure for the exact tire, not a geometric one.
Section width follows a similar pattern. Continental writes widths like "9.0 (6.5) in" for 225/65R17, meaning 9.0 inches measured on a 6.5-inch rim. The nominal 225 mm is 8.86 inches. Measured width depends on the rim the tire is mounted on, so the same tire is wider on a wider wheel.
Why off-road tires measure differently
Size codes describe categories, not exact products. Our explainer on why tire size calculators are not exact covers the general reason. The 17-inch truck sizes show it clearly, in two different directions.
Aggressive LT metric tires can run taller than nominal. Maxxis lists its RAZR MT mud-terrain tire at 31.9 inches in LT265/70R17, 33.0 inches in LT285/70R17, 33.5 in LT295/70R17, 34.0 in LT305/70R17 and 34.6 in LT315/70R17. Each of those is 0.2 to 0.3 inch above the calculated height. Continental's TerrainContact A/T, in contrast, matches the formula almost exactly in the same LT sizes. Maxxis does not give a reason. Tread depth adds to overall diameter, so a deep mud tread is one possible explanation, but that is our inference rather than a published one.
Flotation tires do not always match the name either. The number at the front of a flotation size is a nominal height. In Maxxis's two spec tables, every 35-inch size measures short of 35, while the 37- and 40-inch sizes land on both sides of the nominal figure:
| Size | Nominal height (in) | Published overall diameter (in) | Tire |
|---|---|---|---|
| 35x12.50R17LT | 35.0 | 34.6 | Maxxis Trepador M8060 |
| 35x12.50R17LT | 35.0 | 34.8 | Maxxis RAZR MT |
| 35x13.50R17LT | 35.0 | 34.8 | Maxxis RAZR MT |

| 37x13.50R17LT | 37.0 | 36.8 | Maxxis RAZR MT |
| 40x13.50R17LT | 40.0 | 40.2 | Maxxis Trepador M8060 |
| 40x13.50R17LT | 40.0 | 39.9 | Maxxis RAZR MT |
Source: Maxxis US Trepador M8060 and Maxxis Canada RAZR MT specification tables, read November 1, 2026. Maxxis writes the Trepador sizes in the form 35X12.50-17LT; sizes are shown here in one format for comparison.
A "35-inch" tire on a 17-inch wheel is listed at 34.6 inches by Maxxis for one model and 34.8 inches for another. Maxxis's LT315/70R17 RAZR MT is also listed at 34.6 inches, the same height as its 35x12.50R17 Trepador. So a metric size and a flotation size that look very different on paper can stand at exactly the same height. In the 37-inch sizes, the Trepador runs a little taller than nominal (37.1 and 37.3 inches) and the RAZR MT a little shorter (36.7 and 36.8 inches). If clearance is tight, compare the published diameters of the specific tires you are considering, not the names.
Comparing two 17-inch sizes
When you change size, three things change with the diameter: how much room the tire needs, how your speedometer reads and how the vehicle rides. Use the chart to work out the differences before you buy.
Speedometer effect
A speedometer counts wheel revolutions and assumes a fixed distance per turn. Fit a taller tire and each turn covers more ground, so the speedometer reads low by the same percentage the diameter increased. Our guide to plus-sizing tires explains the principle in more detail.
Worked example: 235/65R17 is 29.03 inches tall and 225/65R17 is 28.52 inches, a 1.8 percent difference. If you replace 225/65R17 tires with 235/65R17s, then at an indicated 60 mph you are actually doing about 61.1 mph, and the odometer under-records distance by the same proportion. Moving from 265/70R17 to 285/70R17 adds 3.5 percent of diameter and raises the vehicle about 0.55 inch at the axle, because only half of the extra diameter is below the hub.
Ride and handling
Within one wheel size, all the height difference is sidewall. In the chart, sidewalls run from 3.2 inches (205/40R17) to 10 inches (37x12.50R17). A shorter sidewall flexes less, which generally sharpens steering response and passes more road impact to the cabin. A taller sidewall generally does the opposite. These are general tendencies, not measured properties of any particular tire.
Rim width
Every tire is approved for a range of wheel widths. Continental's specs give the ranges for its 17-inch sizes, and they widen as the tire does:
- 205/50R17: 5.5 to 7.5 inches
- 215/55R17 and 215/65R17: 6.0 to 7.5 inches
- 225/55R17, 225/60R17 and 225/65R17: 6.0 to 8.0 inches
- 235/65R17: 6.5 to 8.5 inches
- 255/65R17: 7.0 to 9.0 inches
- LT285/70R17: 7.5 to 9.0 inches
- LT315/70R17: 8.0 to 11.0 inches
A tire wider than your original may need a wider wheel than you have. Check the approved range for the exact tire before you order it, since another maker's range for the same size can differ.
Same height, different size: 17-inch near-equivalents
Several sizes on Firestone's list end up within about 0.1 inch of each other in height. That is useful when your original size is hard to find, or when you are comparing quotes:
- 215/60R17 and 235/55R17: 27.16 and 27.18 inches. The 235 is about 0.8 inch wider.
- 215/65R17 and 235/60R17: 28.00 and 28.10 inches.
- 265/60R17 and 245/65R17: 29.52 and 29.54 inches.
- 205/50R17 and 225/45R17: 25.07 and 24.97 inches.
- 205/55R17 and 225/50R17: 25.88 and 25.86 inches.
- 255/65R17 and 235/70R17: 30.05 and 29.95 inches.
- 285/75R17 and 305/70R17: 33.83 and 33.81 inches.
NHTSA's advice on tire size is direct: "purchase new tires that are the same size as the vehicle's original tires or another size recommended by the vehicle manufacturer," and "if you have any doubt about the correct size to choose, consult with the tire dealer." Matching height is only the first check. Each pair differs in width, which affects rim fit and clearance, and the load index and speed rating must suit your vehicle. Treat these as sizes to research, not automatic substitutes, and confirm them with your vehicle maker's approved sizes or a tire professional.
Moving from a 16-inch to a 17-inch wheel
Going up one wheel size while keeping the overall height close is called plus-one sizing. The arithmetic is the same as above. A 215/65R16 is 27.0 inches tall. On a 17-inch wheel, 225/55R17 is 26.74 inches, about 1 percent shorter, and 225/60R17 is 27.63 inches, about 2.3 percent taller. Neither is a perfect match, which is typical: the tire has to make up a full inch of wheel diameter with sidewall alone. If you are coming from 15-inch wheels, our 15 inch tire size chart lists those sizes calculated the same way. Going up a wheel size, our 18 inch tire size chart does the same for every 18-inch size and checks it against 38 sizes Continental has measured.
Load index and LT sizes on 17-inch wheels
Two tires in the same size can carry different loads. Continental's CrossContact LX25 is listed in 235/65R17 with load index 108, a 2,205 lb maximum load and the XL (extra load) range. Its ControlContact Tour M A/S in the same 235/65R17 is load index 104, 1,984 lb and standard load (SL). The size is identical; the load capacity is not.
LT sizes are a different service type again. Continental's TerrainContact A/T in LT245/75R17, LT265/70R17 and LT285/70R17 is load range E, load index 121, with a 3,195 lb maximum load per tire. The passenger 255/75R17 in the same line is SL, load index 115, 2,679 lb. An LT tire is not just a stronger P tire: it is rated under different conventions and inflation assumptions, which our page on LT vs P tires explains. If your vehicle came on P-metric tires, changing to LT is a service type change that should be confirmed with a tire professional.
When you replace tires, the load index and speed rating should be at least what your vehicle specifies. Those requirements are printed on the vehicle, not on the tires you happen to have.
How to choose the right 17-inch tire size
- Find your original size. Firestone points to the same places a technician would look: "on the inside frame of the driver's side door, inside the glove box door, your driver's manual or your tire's sidewall." The door-frame placard is the reliable one, because the tires fitted now may not be the originals. Our guide to the tire and loading information placard shows how to read it.
- Look up the size in the chart. Note its height, width and sidewall.
- If you want a different size, compare heights. Work out the percentage change and what it does to the speedometer, as in the worked example above.
- Check width against your wheel. Find the approved rim width range in the tire maker's specs.
- Check load index and speed rating. Match or exceed your placard. Watch for SL, XL and LT differences in the same size.
- Check the published diameter of the exact tire. This matters most for off-road tires, where real heights can differ from the size code by a few tenths of an inch either way.
- Confirm clearance on the vehicle. No chart can tell you whether a tire clears the suspension, brakes and bodywork at full steering lock and full compression.
Common mistakes with 17-inch tire sizes
- Assuming all 17-inch tires are about the same size. They differ by more than 13 inches in height on Firestone's list alone.
- Changing width without allowing for height. Keeping the aspect ratio and widening the tire also makes it taller: 225/65R17 to 245/65R17 adds about an inch of diameter.
- Taking flotation sizes literally. A 35x12.50R17 is listed at 34.6 to 34.8 inches by Maxxis, not 35.0.
- Using geometric revolutions per mile for calibration. Published figures for real tires were about 3 percent higher in every case we checked.
- Comparing load index across SL, XL and LT tires. The same number can be rated under different inflation conventions.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most common 17 inch tire size?
Firestone lists 215/55R17, 225/45R17, 225/65R17 and 265/70R17 as its most popular 17" tires. They are about 26.3, 25.0, 28.5 and 31.6 inches tall, calculated from the size code.
How tall is a 225/65R17 tire?
About 28.5 inches. The sidewall is 225 x 0.65 = 146.25 mm (5.76 in), so the diameter is 17 + 2 x 5.76 = 28.52 inches. Continental lists its 225/65R17 tires at 28.5 inches.
How tall is a 265/70R17 tire?
About 31.6 inches tall and 10.4 inches wide, with a 7.3-inch sidewall. Continental lists its LT265/70R17 TerrainContact A/T at 31.6 inches; Maxxis lists its LT265/70R17 RAZR MT at 31.9 inches.
Is a 35x12.50R17 really 35 inches tall?
Not exactly. In the two listings we checked it is slightly less: Maxxis lists its 35x12.50R17LT at 34.6 inches in the Trepador M8060 and 34.8 inches in the RAZR MT. The 35 in the size code is a nominal height.
Can I put 235/65R17 instead of 225/65R17?
Often, but check first. 235/65R17 is about 1.8 percent taller and 0.4 inch wider, so confirm the rim width range, clearance, load index and speed rating. Your speedometer would read about 1.8 percent low.
Are all 17 inch tires the same size?
No. 17 inch is only the wheel diameter. Tires that mount on a 17-inch wheel on Firestone's list range from about 23.5 to 37 inches tall, with very different widths and load ratings.
What 17-inch size is closest to 215/65R16?
215/65R16 is about 27.0 inches tall. On 17-inch wheels, 225/55R17 (26.74 in) is about 1 percent shorter and 225/60R17 (27.63 in) about 2.3 percent taller. Check your vehicle maker's approved sizes before changing.
Why does my tire's revs per mile differ from a calculator?
A calculator uses the unloaded diameter. A loaded tire flattens where it meets the road and rolls on a smaller radius, so it turns more often. Continental's published figures for 17-inch sizes were 3.0 to 3.1 percent higher than the geometric ones.
Where do I find my vehicle's tire size?
On the tire placard on the driver's door frame, inside the glove box door, in the owner's manual or on the tire sidewall. The placard shows the size the vehicle was built with.
