Kubota tractor battery size chart: BX series Group 26R 560 CCA, B and LX series Group 51R 430-480 CCA, L series Group 24 490-600 CCA, M series Group 31 900 CCA

Short answer: Kubota's own manuals and parts catalog give the sizes. BX sub-compacts take a Group 26R battery (560 CCA). B2301, B2601 and LX compacts take a Group 51R (Kubota type 55B24L, 430 to 480 CCA). L-series and MX tractors take a Group 24 (580 to 600 CCA on the L02, 490 to 582 CCA on the Grand L). Most M-series tractors take a Group 31 (Kubota "GP31", 900 CCA). Every Kubota in this chart uses a 12-volt battery.

We built this chart from Kubota's own documents, read on November 3, 2026: the battery tables in Kubota operator's manuals, Kubota USA's detailed spec sheets, and the battery part descriptions in Kubota's parts catalog. Battery Council International (BCI) dimensions and GS Yuasa's guide to Japanese battery codes fill in the sizing. Many of the manuals we could download are Kubota's Australian and New Zealand editions, so we say which document each figure comes from. A US tractor can differ by serial number, so confirm with your own manual.

Kubota prints its battery specs in a different way from US car makers. Many Kubota manuals give a Japanese (JIS) code such as 55B24L or 80D26R rather than a BCI group number, which is why online lookup tables disagree. If you have a green tractor too, our John Deere battery size chart uses the same method with Deere's documents.

Each row below copies the battery type and ratings exactly as Kubota prints them. The "BCI group to buy" column comes from Kubota's own documents where possible: a group printed in the manual (26R-560, GP31), or the group in the description of the Kubota battery part catalogued for that model. Where neither exists, we show BCI's best-fit match and label it.

CCA = cold cranking amps, RC = reserve capacity, Ah = amp-hours at the 5-hour rate unless marked 20 h. Ratings are copied from Kubota operator manuals and Kubota USA spec sheets. "Kubota catalog part" = the Kubota battery part number whose parts-catalog where-used list includes that model. Sources and read dates are below.

Two things stand out. First, the B2301 and B2601 manual uses a JIS code (55B24L) while the BX manual prints a BCI code (26R-560), even though both are compact Kubotas of a similar era. Second, ratings change inside a series. The L02 lineup splits by transmission: 580 CCA for the L2502, L3302 and L3902 gear-drive models, 600 CCA for the HST models and every L4802, and the LX3310HSDCC cab tractor gets a higher-capacity battery than the rest of the LX range.

How to read Kubota's battery codes

Kubota uses three kinds of battery code in its manuals, sometimes in the same manual:

  • A BCI code with a rating: the BX manual's 26R-560 is BCI Group 26R with 560 cold cranking amps.
  • A JIS code: 55B24L(S)-MF, 75D26R, 80D26R and 180G51 are Japanese Industrial Standard battery types.
  • Both together: the M-series manuals print GP31 (105E41R), meaning BCI Group 31, with a JIS type in brackets.

A JIS code describes the size and terminal layout in one string. GS Yuasa's guide to JIS battery types breaks it down like this:

Part of the code55B24L exampleWhat it means (GS Yuasa)
First number55Performance rank, with no unit: overall starting performance and capacity. A higher number means better performance.
LetterBShort-side size class (width × case height): B = 129 (127) × 203 mm, D = 173 × 204 mm, E = 176 × 213 mm, G = 222 × 213 mm.
Two digits24Approximate length in centimeters (24 = about 24 cm).
L or RLTerminal position: which side the positive terminal sits on. F, G and H sizes do not carry L or R.
Suffix(S)-MFKubota's suffix, not part of the size code GS Yuasa describes. Kubota's manuals describe the original battery as maintenance-free.

Code breakdown from GS Yuasa's guide to reading JIS battery types.

So a 55B24L is a narrow battery about 24 cm long, and an 80D26R is a wider battery about 26 cm long with a higher performance rank than a 75D26R. The L or R does not change the size, only which side the positive post is on. Get it wrong and the cables may not reach, or the positive terminal may end up next to metal it should not touch. Our guide to what a battery group size describes explains the BCI side of the same idea.

Converting a JIS code to a BCI group

BCI publishes a "best fit" table that pairs JIS types with BCI groups, and it covers most of Kubota's codes:

  • 55B24L is listed against BCI Group 51R. That matches Kubota's US catalog, which uses its Group 51R battery for the B2301, B2601 and LX tractors.
  • 75D26R and 80D26R are listed against Group 24, which again matches Kubota's catalog for the L and MX tractors.
  • 180G51 is listed against Group 4D, the large commercial group. Kubota prints no group for it, so take the measurements to your dealer.
  • 105E41R is listed against Group 29H, not Group 31. BCI gives the JIS E41 case as 410 mm long and notes that a 29H is 76 mm shorter.

That last point is a real conflict. Kubota's manuals print "GP31" first, and Kubota catalogs part 77700-00453 for its M tractors, which dealers list as Group 31P. A Group 31 case is 330 mm long, much shorter than the 410 mm E41 case. We follow Kubota's "GP31" because it is the maker's own description. If the battery in your M-series tractor is a long JIS 105E41R, measure the tray and the hold-down before you order a Group 31. BCI describes its table as a best fit, not an exact equivalent, and says it makes no promise about accuracy.

If you buy through a Kubota dealer, these are the battery parts its catalog uses for tractors. The descriptions are as Kubota's parts store shows them (see the Group 51R and Group 24 listings, for example).

Part descriptions are as shown on Kubota's own parts store. The where-used families come from the Kubota parts-catalog lists that authorized dealer New Holland Rochester publishes for each part, read November 3, 2026. Dealers show these numbers superseded by KB-prefixed parts; Kubota's store lists KB24-700145 and KB31A-00453. Ask your dealer for the current number.

The where-used lists are broad. One Group 51R part covers B-series compacts, LX tractors, garden tractors and zero-turn mowers. One Group 24 part covers almost the whole L line from the L2501 to the L6060. That is useful when you are shopping: the battery that fits an L3901 also fits an L3902 or L4802, because Kubota uses the same part.

Battery dimensions for the groups Kubota uses

A battery that is electrically right but does not sit flat in the tray, or will not take the hold-down, will shake itself apart. These are BCI's maximum overall dimensions for each group:

The 26R and the 51R are the two most often confused. The 26R is shorter (208 mm) but much wider (173 mm), while the 51R is longer (238 mm) and narrow (129 mm). A tray built for one will not hold the other. For the full BCI table, including groups Kubota does not use, see our car battery group size chart.

Where other Kubota battery charts go wrong

Before writing this, we read the top US search results for this question. Most did not cite a specific Kubota document, and they disagreed with each other and with Kubota:

  • BX series listed as 51R or U1R. Kubota's BX manual prints 26R-560, and Kubota's Group 26R part (77700-00426) is the one catalogued for the BX1880, BX2380, BX2680 and BX23S.
  • B series listed as Group 24 or 24F. Kubota catalogs the B2301HSD, B2601HSD and many other B models under its Group 51R battery, and the B01 manual specifies a 55B24L, which BCI also pairs with 51R.
  • Broad CCA advice with no source. One page says 500 to 800 CCA "is adequate" for most compact Kubotas. Kubota rates the B2601 battery at 430 CCA and the BX at 560, and asks for a battery of equal specification.

The fix is simple: use the battery table in your operator's manual, or the label on the battery Kubota fitted, rather than a generic series chart.

How to find the right battery for your Kubota

  1. Find the exact model and serial number. Kubota splits ratings by model suffix (HST, HSDCC, gear drive), and its parts catalog splits some models by serial-number range, so "L3302" alone may not be enough.
  2. Read the battery table in your operator's manual. Kubota prints it in the periodic service section, under checking or charging the battery. It gives the battery type, voltage, reserve capacity, cold cranking amps and normal charging rate. The specification table at the front of the manual repeats the voltage, CCA and RC.
  3. Read the label on the battery. If it is the original, it will show a code such as 26R-560 or 55B24L. Use our JIS table above to decode it.
  4. Measure the tray and note the positive post. Length, width and height, plus which side the positive terminal is on, will confirm the group, especially on an older tractor where a previous owner may have fitted something else.
  5. Match the ratings Kubota lists. Kubota's manuals tell you to use "a battery of equal specification" to the table. Equal CCA and reserve capacity in the correct case is the target.
  6. Ask a dealer if anything does not match. A Kubota dealer can look up the current part number from the serial number, including the newer KB-prefixed numbers that replace the 77700 series.

CCA, reserve capacity and amp-hours: which numbers matter

Kubota lists up to four ratings for each battery. Here is what each one tells you:

  • Cold cranking amps (CCA) measure starting power in the cold. It is the rating Kubota quotes in every spec table we read, and the one to check first if you start the tractor in winter.
  • Reserve capacity (RC), in minutes, measures how long the battery can supply power with the charging system not working. Kubota's figures run from 79 minutes (B26) to 380 minutes (M7-132, M7-152 and M7-172).
  • Amp-hours (Ah) appear in some tables, usually at the 5-hour rate. The GX and M7 manuals use the 20-hour rate, which gives a bigger number: the GX manual lists the same GP31 battery as 80 Ah at 5 hours and 100 Ah at 20 hours. Do not compare the two directly.
  • Normal charging rate is the current Kubota recommends for charging that battery: 4.5 A for the 55B24L, 6.5 A for the 75D26R and 80D26R, 8.6 A for the BX 26R and 11 A for the GP31.

The M7-132, M7-152 and M7-172 manual gives its battery as 174 Ah with "1400 (−18 °C or 0.4 °F/EN)" cold cranking amps. That is a European EN rating, measured to a different standard from SAE CCA, so we left it out of the CCA chart rather than compare unlike numbers. Our CCA vs RC vs Ah guide explains each rating in more depth, and whether a higher CCA battery is better covers what happens when you go well above the listed figure.

Replacing a Kubota tractor battery safely

Kubota's manuals repeat similar battery safety points. In Kubota's own words from the BX manual:

  • "When disconnecting the cable from the battery, start with the negative terminal first. When connecting the cable to the battery, start with the positive terminal first."
  • "When the battery is being activated, hydrogen and oxygen gases in the battery are extremely explosive. Keep open sparks and flames away from the battery at all times, especially when charging the battery."
  • "To prevent short circuit, before charging, make sure to remove the metal-battery-holder."
  • For refillable batteries, do not use or charge the battery if the fluid level is below the lower-limit mark.

The BX manual also has an unusual jump-start procedure. It tells you to take the dead battery out and put it on the tractor's step, connect the positive cable between the two batteries, then clamp the negative cable from the helper battery to the tractor's front bolt, as far from the dead battery as possible. Disconnect in exactly the reverse order. Use a helper battery of the same voltage, and never jump start a frozen battery.

Checking the charge with a voltmeter

Kubota says non-accessible maintenance-free batteries are designed so you never add water, and tells you to check their state of charge with a voltmeter. This is the reference table from the BX manual:

Battery voltageReference state of charge
12.6 V100% (full charge)
12.4 V75%
12.2 V50%
12.0 V25%
11.8 V0%

From the BX1880/BX2380/BX2680 operator's manual. Kubota gives this table for maintenance-free batteries.

Storing a Kubota battery over winter

Kubota's M-series, Grand L and L3200/L3800 manuals give the same storage advice for long periods. Remove the battery from the tractor, adjust the electrolyte to the proper level (on refillable batteries), and store it in a dry place out of direct sunlight. The battery self-discharges in storage, so Kubota says to "recharge it once every three months in hot seasons and once every six months in cold seasons." Kubota also says "a boost charge is only for emergencies", and the LX manual adds that a boost-charged battery should be recharged as early as possible: "Failure to do this will shorten the battery's service life."

Flooded or AGM?

Kubota's catalog batteries are described as "WET", meaning flooded lead-acid, and several manuals give the factory battery as maintenance-free (MF). Kubota's tables do not say whether an AGM replacement is acceptable. An AGM battery built to the correct BCI group shares that group's case size, but charging needs can differ. Our guide to replacing a flooded battery with AGM covers what to check first. If you are unsure, stay with the flooded type Kubota specifies.

Frequently asked questions

What size battery does a Kubota BX take?

Kubota's BX1880, BX2380 and BX2680 manual lists battery type 26R-560: a 12 V Group 26R battery with 560 CCA and 86 minutes of reserve capacity. Kubota's US spec sheets give the same 560 CCA and 86 min for the BX23S.

What battery does a Kubota B2601 use?

The B2301 and B2601 manual specifies a 55B24L(S)-MF battery: 12 V, 36 Ah, 80 minutes reserve capacity and 430 CCA. In the US, Kubota catalogs these tractors under its Group 51R battery, part 77700-00424.

What group battery is in a Kubota L series tractor?

Group 24 for most of them. Kubota's Group 24 battery (77700-00450) is listed for the L2501 to L4802 Standard L models and the Grand L40 and L60 models. Kubota rates the L02 at 580 CCA (gear drive) or 600 CCA (HST and L4802), and the Grand L40 and L60 models at up to 582 CCA.

What battery does a Kubota M7040 take?

The M7040 manuals list GP31 (105E41R): a Group 31 battery, 12 V, 85.3 Ah, 160 minutes reserve capacity and 900 CCA. The M6040, M8540 and M9540 manuals list the same battery.

Can I use a 51R battery in a Kubota BX?

Kubota does not list it. The BX manual calls for 26R-560 and Kubota's Group 26R battery is the one catalogued for BX models. A 51R is a different case (238 × 129 mm against 208 × 173 mm for a 26R), so check the tray and cables before trying anything else.

Is a 24F the same as a Group 24 for a Kubota?

No. BCI lists 24F as a separate group, 273 mm long against 260 mm for a Group 24, with a different terminal layout. Kubota catalogs a Group 24 battery for its L and MX tractors, so buy a 24 unless your current battery or dealer says otherwise.

How many CCA does a Kubota tractor battery need?

It depends on the model: 430 CCA for a B2601 or LX2610, 560 for a BX, 580 to 600 for an L02, 490 to 582 for a Grand L, and 900 for most M models with a GP31 battery. Kubota says to replace the battery with one of equal specification.

Do I need a Kubota-brand battery?

Kubota's manuals ask for a battery of equal specification. The battery tables we read do not say it must be Kubota-brand. Match the type or group, terminal layout, voltage and ratings. Kubota's own batteries carry its part numbers if you want the original part.
