Briggs and Stratton oil filter chart infographic with 492932S and 491056 sizes

Most Briggs & Stratton engines that have an oil filter use one of a handful of spin-on filters. The most common is 492932S, a 2-1/4 in. filter that Briggs & Stratton says is used on most of its pressure-lubricated engines. The taller 491056, the 696854 for Extended Life Series and Professional Series engines, and the 842921 for Vanguard V-Twin Big Block engines cover most of the rest. Several retail part numbers, such as 5049K, 5076K, 4154 and 4206, are the same filters in different packs.

This chart lists only filter numbers, sizes and applications that Briggs & Stratton itself publishes, on its online parts store, its support pages and its operator's manuals. We have not added aftermarket cross-reference numbers, because Briggs & Stratton does not publish them; for those, see the filter maker's own catalog. Where two Briggs & Stratton pages disagree, we show both.

Briggs & Stratton puts the same warning on almost every filter page: many parts look similar, so confirm the replacement against your engine model with its Parts Lookup Tool. The application column above is Briggs & Stratton's own short description, not a complete fit list. A filter described as fitting "most" or "select" engines will not fit every engine in that family.

Retail and bulk pack numbers

Briggs & Stratton sells the same filter under more than one number depending on the pack. Its store describes these packs:

Pack numberContents (per Briggs & Stratton)
5049KDisplay pack of 1 (492932S)
4154Bulk pack of 12 (492932S)
5076 / 5076KDIY part number / display pack of 1 (696854)

4153Bulk pack of 12 (491056)
423712 × 842921

Source: Briggs & Stratton Online Store; 5076 from the Extended Life installation instructions.

This is why a filter box at a hardware store can show a different number from the one in your manual. If the pack description names the service number in your manual, it is the same filter. Briggs & Stratton's installation instructions for the extended-life filter, for example, are headed "For Service Part No. 696854 / DIY Part No. 5076".

Where Briggs & Stratton's own sources disagree

  • 491056 length. The operator's manual for Models 210000, 280000 and 310000 (Form 276344-3/07) lists the 491056 as "3-1/2 in. long". The store page for the 4153 bulk pack of 491056 filters gives the height as 3 3/8 in. We show both because we cannot tell which measurement method each source uses.
  • 491056 application. The store page for the single 491056 filter says it is used on select 3-cylinder liquid-cooled engines. The 4153 bulk-pack page says the same filter is used on select Intek and Vanguard OHV engines and select L-head twin-cylinder engines. Both pages then give the same "fits many" list of engine models (260772 through 303777). Check your engine model rather than relying on either description.
  • Replacement interval. The operator's manual says to replace the oil filter after every 100 hours of operation. Several store pages say once per year or every 100 hours. Briggs & Stratton's oil change guide says to replace it at least once per season. Your engine's own manual is the authority.

Fit lists Briggs & Stratton publishes

For some filters, the Briggs & Stratton store lists engine model numbers the filter "fits many" of. These are partial lists, and Briggs & Stratton says compatibility is determined by the engine's model number and asks you to contact it with questions:

Engine model numbers in these lists are six characters long, such as 31R777 or 121602. That is the "Model" part of the Model-Type-Code stamped on the engine. Our guide on how to find your engine code covers where engine identification numbers are found, and Briggs & Stratton's own operator's manual asks owners to record the model, type and code numbers for ordering parts.

How to find the right filter for your engine

  1. Read the engine's model, type and code. The operator's manual shows where these are stamped on the engine. Briggs & Stratton's representatives give the same advice when asked about filter fitment: have the engine's model, type and code numbers available. The same numbers identify the plug in our Briggs and Stratton spark plug chart.
  2. Check the operator's manual parts list. Briggs & Stratton manuals often have a partial parts list near the back. The manual for Models 210000, 280000 and 310000, for example, lists 491056 (3-1/2 in. long) and 492932 (2-1/4 in. long).
  3. Use the Briggs & Stratton Parts Lookup Tool. It shows the part diagram for your exact engine model. Our guide to reading an exploded parts diagram explains how to read it.
  4. Match the filter you remove. The number printed on the old filter is a useful check, but confirm it against the lookup, since an earlier owner may have fitted a different filter.

If the manual and the online lookup give different numbers, ask an authorized Briggs & Stratton dealer; part numbers can be superseded over time, and a manual printed years ago will not show later changes. A number with an "S" suffix, such as 492932S, is how the 492932 appears on the store today; the operator's manual from 2007 lists it as 492932 without the suffix.

Short filter vs tall filter

Briggs & Stratton's numbers give two common lengths: 2-1/4 in. for the 492932 and 3-1/2 in. (or 3 3/8 in., per the bulk-pack page) for the 491056. Many engines have room for only one of them. Briggs & Stratton lists a specific length for each, so do not substitute one for the other unless the parts lookup for your engine lists it. Briggs & Stratton lists the oil capacity with and without a filter separately in its manuals; for Models 210000, 280000 and 310000 the manual gives about 44 ounces without a filter and about 48 ounces with one.

Do not assume two filters are interchangeable because they thread onto the same adapter. Briggs & Stratton does not publish a thread, gasket or bypass specification for these filters on the pages we used, so we have not listed one. Our guide to oil filter bypass and anti-drainback valves explains why those matter. Our guide to parts you should not interchange explains why a filter that fits physically is not always correct.

How to change a Briggs & Stratton oil filter

Briggs & Stratton's installation steps are the same across its operator's manual, its oil-change guide and the 696854 instructions:

  1. Drain the engine oil and remove the old filter, turning it counterclockwise with a filter wrench or pipe wrench.
  2. Check the sealing surface on the oil filter adapter for debris or old gasket material, and clean it if needed.
  3. Lightly oil the new filter's gasket with fresh, clean engine oil.
  4. Screw the filter on by hand until the gasket contacts the filter adapter, then tighten it a further 1/2 to 3/4 turn.
  5. Add fresh oil to the FULL line on the dipstick. Do not overfill.
  6. Start the engine and run it at idle to check for oil leaks, then stop it, recheck the oil level and top up if needed.

Briggs & Stratton's oil-change guide adds that oil should be changed after the first five hours of use and then annually or every 50 hours, whichever comes first. The 2007 operator's manual says to change the oil after the first 5 to 8 hours, then every 50 hours or every season, and every 25 hours under heavy load or in high temperatures. Briggs & Stratton's lawn mower oil FAQ also recommends draining the oil while it is warm, because warm oil carries off floating particles that would otherwise settle in the engine. For the oil itself, see our guide to engine oil capacity with a filter.

Extended Life Series and Professional Series filters

Briggs & Stratton sells two filters specifically for its Extended Life Series and Professional Series engines. The 696854 is described as used on select Intek Extended Life Series and Professional Series V-Twin engines, and its installation sheet says it fits 12.0 to 30.0 gross HP Extended Life Series and Professional Series engines. The 798576 is described as used on Models 31Q000, 400000, 440000 and 490000 series engines. Gross horsepower here is Briggs & Stratton's rating at 3600 rpm under SAE J1940; our explainer on SAE certified horsepower covers what that rating means.

Briggs & Stratton does not publish a size or height for the 696854 on its store page. Retail listings describe it as 2-1/4 in. tall, but that is not a Briggs & Stratton figure, so we have left the size column blank.

Vanguard and liquid-cooled engines

For Vanguard V-Twin Big Block engines, Briggs & Stratton lists the 842921, also sold as the 4237 twelve-pack. For 3-cylinder liquid-cooled engines it lists the 820314, with a fit list of 432447, 522447, 582447, 588447 and 58A447. Vanguard engines are often used in commercial equipment where the equipment maker sets its own service schedule, so check the equipment manual as well as the engine manual. If the engine is due for a valve check too, our Briggs & Stratton valve clearance chart lists the Vanguard V-twin settings.

Smaller single-cylinder engines

Two filters are listed for smaller pressure-lubricated engines. The 692513 is described as used on select 12 cu. in. Intek vertical-shaft OHV engines, and the 795990 on select 12 and 14 cu. in. pressure-lubricated engines; its page adds that it fits 8.5 and 8.75 gross torque Professional Series engines. Many small walk-behind mower engines have no oil filter at all; Briggs & Stratton's oil-change guide says to skip the filter step if your engine does not have one.

Which manual to check

Briggs & Stratton publishes an operator's manual for each engine family, and the filter number is often in its partial parts list. The equipment maker's manual (for the mower, tractor or generator) can also list a filter, and sometimes a different service interval, because the equipment maker decides how the engine is used. If the two disagree, follow the more frequent interval and confirm the filter number with the Briggs & Stratton parts lookup for your engine model. A repair or service manual goes further and covers adjustment and repair; Briggs & Stratton's operator's manual points owners to a separate shop manual, Part No. 272147, for single-cylinder OHV engines. Our guide to owner's manual vs service manual explains which spec you will find in each.

Common mistakes

  • Buying by engine family name alone. "Intek" and "Vanguard" each cover several filters.
  • Treating a retail pack number as a different filter. 5049K, 4154 and 492932S are all the same filter in different packs, per Briggs & Stratton.
  • Overtightening. Briggs & Stratton specifies hand-tight plus 1/2 to 3/4 turn, not tightening with a wrench.
  • Skipping the leak check. Briggs & Stratton tells you to run the engine at idle and look for leaks after installing a filter.
  • Relying on an aftermarket cross-reference. Briggs & Stratton does not publish one; see what to check in an oil filter cross-reference. If you use a non-Briggs filter, check its maker's catalog for your engine, and note that the operator's manual warns non-genuine parts may not perform as well.
