Jeep Wrangler Towing Capacity Chart 2026: Official Ratings
Every 2026 and 2027 Jeep Wrangler towing rating from Stellantis's spec sheets, with payload, GCWR, hitch, trailer brake and flat-towing rules.
Short answer: The 2026 Jeep Wrangler tows up to 5,000 lb, but only in one kind of configuration: a four-door Rubicon with the eight-speed automatic and the 4.10 axle ratio (with either the 2.0L turbo or the 3.6L V-6). Every other four-door Wrangler is rated at 3,500 lb, including the Sport, Sahara, manual-transmission Rubicons, Rubicons with the 4.56 axle and the 6.4L V-8 392 models. Every two-door Wrangler is rated at 2,000 lb. Stellantis's 2027 Wrangler specifications list the same trailer ratings as 2026.
Every rating on this page comes from Stellantis's own documents: the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Specifications (published November 11, 2025), the 2027 Jeep Wrangler Specifications (published October 22, 2026), the 2026 Wrangler Feature Availability sheet, and the towing section of the 2026 Wrangler owner's manual. We read them on November 3, 2026. The spec sheets' towing tables cover four-door models only; the two-door figure comes from the same documents' engine pages and from Jeep's Wrangler FAQ. Where Jeep's own pages disagree with each other, we say so.
Jeep Wrangler towing capacity at a glance
Stellantis prints the Wrangler's maximum trailer weight in two places. The engine pages of the spec sheet give the short version for each engine, and the towing tables at the back give the full version, row by row. The two agree. This table condenses them into the four answers that matter.
| Wrangler configuration (2026 and 2027) | Max trailer weight |
|---|---|
| Two-door, any engine (2.0L turbo or 3.6L V-6), any trim | 2,000 lb |
| Four-door Sport, Sport S, Willys, Sahara, any engine or transmission | 3,500 lb |
| Four-door Rubicon, six-speed manual, or automatic with 4.56 axle (Xtreme 35 Package) | 3,500 lb |
| Four-door Rubicon, 8-speed automatic, 4.10 axle, LT285/70R17C tires (2.0L or 3.6L) | 5,000 lb |
| Four-door 6.4L V-8 (Moab 392; Willys 392 on the 2027 sheet) | 3,500 lb |

The spread is narrow compared with a pickup; our Jeep Gladiator towing capacity chart shows the Wrangler's sister truck rated at up to 7,700 lb. For the Wrangler there are only three numbers, 2,000, 3,500 and 5,000 lb, and body style decides most of it. Engine choice matters less than you might expect: the 2.0L turbo four and the 3.6L V-6 share every rating, and the 470-horsepower 6.4L V-8 is rated lower than the best four-cylinder Rubicon. What moves a four-door Wrangler from 3,500 to 5,000 lb is the drivetrain combination, not the engine.
Full 2026 Jeep Wrangler towing chart (four-door)
This is Stellantis's towing table for the four-door 2026 Wrangler, copied row by row. Stellantis splits it into Sport, Sahara and Rubicon tables; the 6.4L V-8 row is printed at the bottom of the Rubicon table, and it belongs to the Moab 392, the only model the spec sheet lists with that engine for 2026. Payload, base weight and the axle ratings are included because they decide how much of the trailer rating you can actually use.
| Model | Engine | Transmission | Axle | Max trailer (lb) | GCWR (lb) | Payload (lb) | Base weight (lb) | GAWR front / rear (lb) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sport | 3.6L V-6 | 6-speed manual (D478) | 3.45 | 3,500 | 8,400 | 1,249 | 4,251 | 2,700 / 3,000 |

Source: Stellantis, 2026 Jeep Wrangler Specifications (11/11/2025), engine pages and Towing Capacities tables. Four-door models only; Stellantis does not publish a two-door towing table. The 6.4L V-8 row is printed in the Rubicon table and applies to the Moab 392. GCWR per Stellantis = base weight + EPA options weight + 2 passenger weight + trailer weight rating + trailer equipment.
Three things stand out in the table. First, only two rows reach 5,000 lb, and both are automatic Rubicons with the 4.10 axle. They also carry the highest gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of any Wrangler, 10,300 lb, which is what makes room for the bigger trailer. Second, the Rubicon's heavier-duty axles (front GAWR 3,100 lb and rear 3,550 lb, against 2,700 and 3,000 lb on the Sport) do not on their own earn a higher rating: the manual and 4.56 Rubicons share those axle ratings and still stop at 3,500 lb. Third, payload varies more than towing does. It runs from 1,088 lb on the V-8 to 1,562 lb on the V-6 Rubicon with the 4.56 axle, and payload is often the limit you reach first when you tow, as the worked example further down shows.
The spec sheet describes the Rubicon's rear axle as a Dana 44 HD full-float unit and lists Tru-Lok electronic lockers front and rear on Rubicon models. The Sport and Sahara use open differentials with the 3.45 ratio. Those are the hardware differences between the two groups of rows, but Stellantis does not say which component sets each rating, so we will not guess.
What it takes to get the 5,000 lb rating
The engine pages of Stellantis's spec sheet spell out the condition. For the 2.0L turbo, the 5,000 lb rating applies to the "4-door Rubicon, automatic 4.10 axle ratio with LT285/70R17C tire." For the 3.6L V-6, the 2026 sheet says "4-door Rubicon, 4.10 automatic," and the 2027 sheet adds the same tire wording. Put together, a Wrangler needs all of the following to be rated at 5,000 lb:
- Four doors. No two-door Wrangler is rated above 2,000 lb.
- Rubicon. The Sport and Sahara tables stop at 3,500 lb.
- The eight-speed automatic (850RE). Both six-speed manual Rubicon rows are rated at 3,500 lb.
- The 4.10 axle ratio. The automatic Rubicon with the 4.56 axle is rated at 3,500 lb.
- The standard LT285/70R17C tire. The spec sheet lists this BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 size as standard on the Rubicon and Willys.
Either gas engine qualifies. The 2.0L turbo (270 hp, 295 lb-ft) and the 3.6L Pentastar V-6 (285 hp, 260 lb-ft) both have a 5,000 lb row with a 10,300 lb GCWR. Factory towing equipment matters too: Stellantis's press kit qualifies its "best-in-class maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds" with "when properly equipped," and the hitch section below covers what Jeep's tow group includes.
Why a Rubicon with 35-inch tires is rated at 3,500 lb
This catches many buyers out. The Xtreme 35 Package is the option that puts 35-inch tires on a Wrangler. Stellantis's feature availability sheet says it includes LT315/70R17C BFGoodrich KO2 tires, 17-by-8-inch beadlock-capable wheels, a 1.5-inch factory suspension lift and "4.56:1 axle ratio." In the towing table, an automatic Rubicon with the 4.56 axle is rated at 3,500 lb, with an 8,600 lb GCWR. So a Rubicon that leaves the factory with the Xtreme 35 Package is not a 5,000 lb Wrangler, even though it looks like the most capable one.
The same applies to the Rubicon X. Stellantis's feature availability sheet says the Rubicon X "includes Xtreme 35 Package (with 4-door auto trans and 2-door 2.0L)." The towing tables do not list the Rubicon X by name, but a four-door automatic Rubicon X built with that package has the 4.56 axle, and Stellantis rates 4.56 automatic Rubicons at 3,500 lb. Some dealer pages say the Rubicon X tows 5,000 lb. Before you rely on that, check the axle ratio on the window sticker for the vehicle in front of you; our guide to getting a window sticker by VIN explains how to find one for a used Wrangler. If it reads 4.56, the table says 3,500 lb.
Oddly, the 4.56 rows carry more payload: 1,562 lb with the V-6 and 1,545 lb with the 2.0L, against 1,328 and 1,310 lb with 4.10. Base weight plus payload comes to 6,250 lb for those two 2026 rows, which matches the top of the 5,100 to 6,250 lb GVWR range Jeep's FAQ gives for the 2026 Wrangler. Stellantis does not list GVWR row by row, so treat this as a reason to read your own door label rather than as a published rating.
Manual transmission Rubicons
The 3.6L V-6 is the only engine offered with the six-speed manual. Stellantis rates both manual Rubicon rows, with the 4.10 and the optional 4.88 axle, at 3,500 lb with an 8,500 lb GCWR. The manual Sport is also 3,500 lb. If you want the 5,000 lb rating, the manual is off the table. Jeep's owner's manual adds a towing rule for manual-transmission Wranglers: "all starts must be in FIRST gear to avoid excessive clutch slippage."
Two-door Jeep Wrangler towing capacity
Every two-door 2026 and 2027 Wrangler is rated at 2,000 lb. The engine pages of both U.S. spec sheets give "2,000 lbs. (2-door)" for the 3.6L V-6 and the 2.0L turbo, Stellantis's Canadian spec sheets give the same figure as 907 kg, and Jeep's FAQ says "the 2026 Jeep Wrangler 2-door can tow up to a maximum of 2,000 pounds, when properly equipped." That holds for the two-door Rubicon too; the 5,000 lb condition names four-door Rubicons only.
Stellantis does not publish a two-door towing table, so there are no row-by-row two-door payload or GCWR figures to show. The spec sheet does show why the two-door is a different vehicle: its wheelbase is 96.8 inches, against 118.4 inches for the four-door. At 2,000 lb the two-door sits right at the threshold where Jeep's manual says trailer brakes become required (more on that below), so a two-door is realistically a vehicle for small utility trailers, a light pop-up or a jet ski.
Wrangler 392 towing capacity (6.4L V-8)
The V-8 Wrangler is rated at 3,500 lb, the same as a Sport. Stellantis's 2026 spec sheet lists the 6.4L V-8 as standard on the Moab 392 and gives it a "Max. Gross Trailer Weight" of "3,500 lbs." The 2027 sheet lists the engine as standard on the Willys 392 and Moab 392 with the same 3,500 lb figure. Jeep's Wrangler capability page also lists "maximum towing capacity (lb) 3500" for the 6.4L.
The V-8 row has a 9,400 lb GCWR, the second highest of any Wrangler, but it also has the heaviest base weight (5,268 lb for 2026, 5,283 lb for 2027) and the lowest payload, 1,088 lb. Stellantis's press kit says the Moab 392 comes with 35-inch all-terrain tires and a 4.56 axle ratio. If you want a Wrangler mainly for towing, the 392 is not the one to pick; its extra power does not translate into a higher rating.
2027 Jeep Wrangler towing capacity: what changed
Nothing changed in the trailer ratings. Stellantis's 2027 spec sheet, published October 22, 2026, lists the same 2,000, 3,500 and 5,000 lb figures as 2026, the same GCWRs and the same axle ratings. What did change is base weight in six rows, and payload in three of them. These are the rows where the 2027 figures differ from 2026:
| Configuration (four-door) | Base weight 2026 → 2027 (lb) | Payload 2026 → 2027 (lb) | Max trailer, both years (lb) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sport 2.0L turbo I-4 8-speed automatic 3.45 | 4,297 → 4,311 | 1,203 → 1,189 | 3,500 |
| Sahara 3.6L V-6 8-speed automatic 3.45 | 4,464 → 4,547 | 1,136 → 1,153 | 3,500 |
| Sahara 2.0L turbo I-4 8-speed automatic 3.45 | 4,481 → 4,482 | 1,119 → 1,218 | 3,500 |
| Rubicon 2.0L turbo I-4 8-speed automatic 4.10 | 4,640 → 4,654 | 1,310 → 1,310 | 5,000 |
| Rubicon 2.0L turbo I-4 8-speed automatic 4.56 | 4,705 → 4,719 | 1,545 → 1,545 | 3,500 |
| Moab 392 6.4L V-8 8-speed automatic 4.56 | 5,268 → 5,283 | 1,088 → 1,088 | 3,500 |
Source: Stellantis 2026 (11/11/2025) and 2027 (10/22/2026) Jeep Wrangler Specifications, Towing Capacities tables.
The changes are small, but they show why you should read the table for your own model year. A 2027 Sahara 3.6L weighs 83 lb more than the 2026 version and, with its payload up 17 lb, has a lower GCWR margin, while the 2027 Sahara 2.0L gained 99 lb of payload. Rows that are not in this table, including the 5,000 lb automatic V-6 Rubicon, are identical in both years.
Towing capacity by trim
Stellantis's towing tables are organized by Sport, Sahara and Rubicon, plus the V-8, but the 2026 press kit lists seven trims: Sport, Sport S, Willys, Sahara (four-door only), Rubicon, Rubicon X and Moab 392 (four-door only). The engine-page rule (2,000 lb two-door, 3,500 lb four-door, 5,000 lb four-door Rubicon automatic 4.10) lets you place every one of them.
| Trim (2026 press kit lineup) | Body styles | Max trailer, two-door | Max trailer, four-door |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sport | 2-door, 4-door | 2,000 lb | 3,500 lb |
| Sport S | 2-door, 4-door | 2,000 lb | 3,500 lb |
| Willys | 4-door package on the Sport S per the feature availability sheet (the press kit also mentions a two-door Willys) | 2,000 lb (as every two-door) | 3,500 lb |
| Sahara | 4-door only | — | 3,500 lb |
| Rubicon | 2-door, 4-door | 2,000 lb | 5,000 lb (automatic, 4.10 axle); 3,500 lb (manual or 4.56 axle) |
| Rubicon X | 2-door, 4-door | 2,000 lb | 3,500 lb with the Xtreme 35 Package's 4.56 axle (four-door automatic); check the axle ratio on your sticker |
| Moab 392 | 4-door only | — | 3,500 lb |
Trim list: Stellantis 2026 Wrangler press kit (November 12, 2025). Ratings: 2026 Wrangler Specifications engine pages and towing tables; two-door ratings are not given by trim, so the two-door column applies the engine-page rule; Rubicon X and Willys content: 2026 Feature Availability. The Rubicon X is not listed by name in the towing tables.
The Willys is the one to watch. Stellantis's spec sheet lists the 4.10 axle for "Rubicon, Willys," and the Willys package includes "trailer tow and heavy-duty electrical group." But the feature availability sheet shows the Willys as a package on the Sport S, the 5,000 lb condition names the Rubicon, and the Sport table stops at 3,500 lb. A four-door Willys is therefore a 3,500 lb Wrangler even with the 4.10 axle.
Payload and GCWR: the limits you hit first
The maximum trailer weight is not the whole story. Three other ratings have to hold at the same time, and the owner's manual lists them: total weight "must be distributed between the tow vehicle and the trailer such that the following four ratings are not exceeded," and the four it lists are GVWR, GTW (gross trailer weight), GAWR and the tongue weight rating of the hitch you use. It adds that "GCWR must not be exceeded."
Stellantis prints how it builds the GCWR under each table: "GCWR = Base Weight + EPA OPTIONS WEIGHT + 2 Passenger Weight + Trailer weight rating + Trailer equipment." Subtracting the base weight and the maximum trailer from the GCWR shows how little room the rating leaves for everything else:
| 2026 four-door configuration | GCWR | − base weight | − max trailer | = left for options, 2 passengers and trailer equipment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sport 3.6L V-6 6-speed manual 3.45 | 8,400 | 4,251 | 3,500 | 649 lb |
| Sport 3.6L V-6 8-speed automatic 3.45 | 8,400 | 4,280 | 3,500 | 620 lb |
| Sport 2.0L turbo I-4 8-speed automatic 3.45 | 8,400 | 4,297 | 3,500 | 603 lb |
| Sahara 3.6L V-6 8-speed automatic 3.45 | 8,400 | 4,464 | 3,500 | 436 lb |
| Sahara 2.0L turbo I-4 8-speed automatic 3.45 | 8,400 | 4,481 | 3,500 | 419 lb |
| Rubicon 3.6L V-6 6-speed manual 4.10 | 8,500 | 4,594 | 3,500 | 406 lb |
| Rubicon 3.6L V-6 8-speed automatic 4.10 | 10,300 | 4,623 | 5,000 | 677 lb |
| Rubicon 3.6L V-6 8-speed automatic 4.56 | 8,600 | 4,688 | 3,500 | 412 lb |
| Rubicon 2.0L turbo I-4 8-speed automatic 4.10 | 10,300 | 4,640 | 5,000 | 660 lb |
| Rubicon 2.0L turbo I-4 8-speed automatic 4.56 | 8,600 | 4,705 | 3,500 | 395 lb |
| Moab 392 6.4L V-8 8-speed automatic 4.56 | 9,400 | 5,268 | 3,500 | 632 lb |
Pounds. Arithmetic on Stellantis's published figures (2026 Wrangler Specifications); the 4.88 manual Rubicon row is identical to the 4.10 manual row.
On the 5,000 lb automatic V-6 Rubicon, 10,300 minus 4,623 minus 5,000 leaves 677 lb, and that has to cover options, two people and the trailer equipment. Add a third passenger, a roof tent or a loaded cargo area and the trailer you can legally pull falls below 5,000 lb, because the GCWR is fixed.
Worked example: a 5,000 lb trailer behind a Rubicon
Suppose you hitch a 5,000 lb travel trailer to a 2026 four-door Rubicon 3.6L automatic with the 4.10 axle. Stellantis lists 1,328 lb of payload for that configuration. Tongue weight counts against payload; Jeep's manual says "you must consider this as part of the load on your vehicle." Jeep's own trailer limits pair 3,500 lb of trailer with 350 lb of tongue weight, which is 10 percent, so use 10 percent as an example: a 5,000 lb trailer would put about 500 lb on the hitch. That leaves 1,328 − 500 = 828 lb for driver, passengers, cargo and accessories. Two adults and a weekend of gear can use most of that.
The occupant-and-cargo limit for your Wrangler is printed on the Tire and Loading Information placard, and the owner's manual says the GVWR and axle ratings are on the certification label on the driver's side door or pillar. Our guide to what the door jamb sticker numbers mean shows where each figure sits. Weigh the loaded Wrangler and trailer on a commercial scale; the owner's manual calls that "the recommended way to measure GTW."
Hitch, wiring and factory tow equipment
Stellantis's feature availability sheet describes the Trailer-tow Group as including a "Class II hitch receiver, four-pin and seven-pin adapter, 700-amp battery, auxiliary switches," and notes that on the Rubicon the group "only includes hitch receiver, aux switches" because the other content is already standard there. Trailer-sway control is standard on every 2026 Wrangler, two-door and four-door.
Here is a point the documents do not settle. The owner's manual prints the industry hitch classes, and it lists Class II as "Medium Duty" with a maximum of 3,500 lb:
| Class | Max. trailer hitch industry standard |
|---|---|
| Class I - Light Duty | 2,000 lb (907 kg) |
| Class II - Medium Duty | 3,500 lb (1,587 kg) |
| Class III - Heavy Duty | 6,000 lb (2,721 kg) |
| Class IV - Extra Heavy Duty | 10,000 lb (4,535 kg) |
Source: 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual, Trailer Hitch Classification Definitions.
Yet the factory group for a 5,000 lb Rubicon is described as Class II. Stellantis does not explain the gap, and its spec sheet does not name the receiver class for the 5,000 lb rating. Before you tow more than 3,500 lb, read the rating label on the receiver fitted to your Wrangler, and follow the manual: "Never exceed the maximum tongue weight stamped on your bumper or trailer hitch."
The manual also limits one common setup. "When using a facia/bumper mounted ball on any model, the trailer weight is limited to 3,500 lb (1,588 kg)," with a 30 sq ft (2.79 m²) frontal area limit and a 350 lb (159 kg) tongue weight limit. It says a fascia or bumper-mounted ball "should only be professionally installed." Frontal area is the trailer's maximum height multiplied by its maximum width, so a tall, wide camper can run into that limit before weight does.
For wiring, the manual says the trailer tow package "may include a four- and seven-pin wiring harness," tells you to use a factory-approved harness and connector, and warns: "Do not cut or splice wiring into the vehicle's wiring harness."
Trailer brakes, break-in and towing tips from Jeep
Jeep's owner's manual sets the trailer-brake thresholds plainly: "Trailer brakes are recommended for trailers over 1,000 lb (453 kg) and required for trailers in excess of 2,000 lb (907 kg)." It also says an electronically actuated brake controller is required for trailers with electric brakes, that surge-brake trailers do not need one, and that you must never connect trailer brakes to the vehicle's hydraulic brake lines. In practice, any four-door Wrangler towing near its 3,500 or 5,000 lb rating needs a braked trailer and, with electric brakes, a controller.
Check the trailer's own tires before each trip as well. The manual asks you to check trailer tire pressures and wear before towing. If your trailer runs ST tires, our trailer tire load range chart shows the load each range is rated to carry.
New Wranglers have break-in rules for towing. The manual says: "Do not tow a trailer at all during the first 500 miles (805 km) the new vehicle is driven." Then, "during the first 500 miles (805 km) that a trailer is towed, do not drive over 50 mph (80 km/h) and do not make starts at full throttle."
Jeep's driving advice for towing is short:
- Automatic: select DRIVE. If the transmission shifts often, use AutoStick to pick a lower gear, choosing "the highest gear that allows for adequate performance and avoids frequent downshifts."
- Cruise control: "Do not use in hilly terrain or with heavy loads," and disengage it if speed drops by more than 10 mph.
- Parking: vehicles with trailers "should not be parked on a grade"; set the parking brake, put the transmission in PARK and chock the trailer wheels.
- Safety chains: always use them, cross them under the tongue, and attach them to the frame or hook retainers of the hitch.
Flat towing a Wrangler behind an RV
Many people searching for Wrangler towing figures want the opposite: to tow the Wrangler itself behind a motorhome. Jeep's owner's manual allows it on four-wheel-drive Wranglers. For flat towing, with all four wheels on the ground, the automatic transmission must be in PARK, a manual transmission must be in gear (not in neutral), and the transfer case must be in N (Neutral). The vehicle must be towed forward.
The manual is equally clear about what is not allowed. Dolly towing, with only the front or rear wheels off the ground, is "NOT ALLOWED," and it warns that towing with one set of wheels on the ground "will cause severe transmission and/or transfer case damage." It also says not to use "a fascia/bumper-mounted clamp-on tow bar," and that damage from improper towing "is not covered under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty." Jeep's FAQ says to attach the motorhome's tow arm "to the two brackets on the front of the Wrangler." Follow the full shift-to-neutral procedure in your own manual before the first trip, because the transfer case has to be fully in neutral.
The motorhome needs a rating for the Wrangler's weight. Jeep's FAQ lists 2026 base curb weights of 4,005 to 4,422 lb for the two-door and 4,251 to 4,976 lb for the four-door (non-PHEV), and the spec table above lists a 5,268 lb base weight for the V-8.
How the Wrangler compares
Jeep calls the Wrangler's 5,000 lb rating best-in-class for its segment, and Stellantis's press kit uses the same words. Among SUVs in general it is an ordinary figure: our midsize SUV towing capacity chart shows that most of the family SUVs we listed are rated for 5,000 lb when properly equipped, with the Jeep Grand Cherokee at 6,200 lb. The Wrangler's sister truck goes further: the 2026 Gladiator, with the same 3.6L V-6 and eight-speed automatic, is rated at up to 7,700 lb with its Max Trailer Tow Group, as the Gladiator chart linked above shows. If towing matters more than trail hardware, those are the numbers to compare.
Why websites show different Wrangler towing numbers
Search results for this question disagree, and some of the confusion starts with Jeep. Jeep's 2026 FAQ answers "How much can a Jeep Wrangler tow?" with "the 2026 Jeep Wrangler 4-door can tow up to a maximum of 3,500 pounds," then answers the next question, about campers, with "the maximum towing capacity of a Wrangler 4-door is 5,000 pounds." Both are true for different configurations, which is exactly why a single number is not enough.
Other sources of mismatch:
- Rubicon X and Xtreme 35: some dealer pages give the Rubicon X 5,000 lb. Stellantis's own sheets put the package's 4.56 axle at 3,500 lb.
- Model year: pages that cover several years mix ratings from different builds. For years outside 2026 and 2027, read that year's owner's manual or Stellantis spec sheet.
- Metric rounding: Stellantis Canada's 2026 sheet gives the 5,000 lb rating as 2,267 kg and the 2027 sheet as 2,268 kg. Same rating, different rounding.
- Plug-in hybrid: Stellantis's 2026 and 2027 Wrangler spec sheets list only the 2.0L, 3.6L and 6.4L gas engines; the 4xe does not appear in either. If you own an earlier 4xe, use the documents for its model year.
We explain the general pattern in why car specs differ between websites. The short rule: trust the manufacturer's document for your exact model year and configuration, then your door label.
How to find your own Wrangler's towing rating
- Identify body style, trim, engine and transmission. These are on the window sticker; the window sticker guide linked above covers how to get one if it is missing.
- Find the axle ratio. It decides between 3,500 and 5,000 lb on an automatic four-door Rubicon. The window sticker lists the axle ratio or the package that sets it (such as Xtreme 35).
- Look up the row in the table above for your model year, and note payload and GCWR along with the trailer rating.
- Check the receiver. Read the stamped rating on the hitch and do not exceed its tongue weight.
- Read the labels. Use the payload on the Tire and Loading Information placard and the GVWR and GAWR on the certification label, which reflect the options your Wrangler actually has.
- Weigh the loaded rig. The owner's manual points to a commercial scale as the way to confirm GTW and axle loads.
The 2026 owner's manual itself does not print a Wrangler rating table. Its towing section sends readers to www.jeep.com, or www.jeep.ca in Canada, for maximum trailer weight ratings. That makes the Stellantis spec sheets and Jeep's site the published source for the ratings above. If anything is unclear for your build, ask a Jeep dealer to check the configuration against the VIN.
